Captain jack. Charley Hopper has been sick this week There are several cases of sickness in the neighborhood. School commenced today after a vacation of nearly two weeks and a large attendance is looked for. Drew Milteuberger who has been sick for te past three weeks, is slowly improving. Dr.

Osborn in attendance F. Hart and Robert Warner are in voivea in a law suit concerning a quarrel over some corn purchased by the former. It seems from reports, that some of the boys have been taking ail the Christmas and New Year that the law allows. Grapes grow in profusion on Hunter, and the frosts have apparent by not injuring the hilarious qualities of that luscious fruit. There was a dance at John Arnolds.

Turkey creek, and one at Frank Reese's this week. During a dance at the resideuce of Buckeye Davis some time ago some young men who had imbibed freely, come in and broke up the dance, and as a result some of them are on trial for that offense. We are sorry to hear of such proceedings as they mar the pleasure of the young people and injure the good name of the community. Brusii Judd and wife observed New Year in a way that was highly pleasing to some of their friends by giving a dinner. All present report a pleasant time and a dinner to tempt the appetite of an epicuic, and say that any one there would never doubt the culinary ability of the hostess nor the resources cfhis country.

Those present were, Miss H. M. Judd, Isom Singleton and family, Geo. Briggs and family, Misses Rosa Singleton and Maude Shell and Messrs J. M.

Singleton, John Anderson and J. W. Shell. PINE FLAT ITEMS. By Non Compos Mentis.

Whitted last week. Miss Virgie Bulb of Howell county spent Christmas with friends in Pine Flat. Geo. W. Cunningham and family have moved to Phelps county where they will make their future home.

The members of the new Concord church, assisted ty their friends, have recently furnished the house with new seats, also doing other needy repairs. W. S. C. Riggs of Texas county, is a frequent visitor to this community.

We do not know what the attraction is but perhaps some of the girls can tell. Mr. Whitmill from Linn county Kansas, has purchased and located on a farm this vicinity. We learn that other famine's who came with Mr. Whitmdl are looking for locations.

The entertainment given at the new Concord church on Christmas eve was a grand success. A large crowd gathered earlv in the evening, and at 7 o'clock the house was called to order by the chairman Wm. Riggs, W. C. Whitted was introduced as master of ceremonies, and made a brief and appropriate address of welcome.

After which the entertainment continued for two hours. Every one present seemed to enjoy themselves. The most notable event of the week was the marriage on Christmas day, at the residence of the brides parents, of Mr. Jas. Ward, to Miss Vinnia Auston Rev.

Napier of Sargent officiating. Alter the ceremony was preformed the guests were conducted to the dining room where a sumptious repast was served. On Thursday following the happy young couple with a large number of friends, partook of a splendid dinner at the home of the groom. We join with their may friends in wishing them a happy and prosperious journey on the shifting sea of matrimony. Ava School Notes.

Judge Malloy and Ned Turner were at Squires receiving fat hogs they had bought They paid $2.50 and 2 55 per cwt. The serenaders who were out New Year's night, were treated to stove wood by W. Sell. Frank Thompson says it was tough eating.

The RoberUon literary is progressing nicely. At the last meeting it was decided that "the signs of the times indicate the down fall of the republic." A. C. Abel closed his school at the Fry school houe last week and on Monday he and his wife started to Springfield to consult an occulist jn regard to Mrs. Abel's eyes, which have been troubling her for sometime.

One of M. E. Cunningham's boys was cutting rail timber on a steep hill side last week, when a log started to roll down the hill. It knocked the boy down and rolled over him, bruising him up considerably but fortunately breaking no bones. Squires had a run away Tuesday.

David Robertson, drummer for the Simmons Dry Goods of St Louis, had just arrived and left his team standing while he went into the store. The horses became frightened and ran. turning the corner of Main and Thompson street where the wagon struck a tree, breaking out the tongue and doing other damages to the ex tent of four or five dollars. Ava, Mo. Good roads to Ava and Hartville are not receiving the attention their importance demands. Mansfield business men should take hold of this matter at once and give it attention without delay. Mansfield Mail. That is right, take hold and do something, we will do all we can to help such a laudable enterprise.

If there is anything that is needed badly in this county it Is good roads. Tliere are very few things that will benefit Ava more than a good macadam road to Mansfield, or Cedar Gap. Cedar Gap is about two miles nearer than Mansfield, but a good road can be made to Mansfield at less expense than to Cedar Gap and Mansfield is better able to help. If Mansfield owill start some kind of a good scheme for a good road, Ava will join in and help to the best of her ability. Ava Herald.

We need, that is, Seymour needs a telephone to iiansfleld, a telephone to Ava, a better road to Ava, and a good road to Mansfield. Don't we? Certainly; well we can have all of these things by trying.and what town ever got anything without trying. Seymour Enterprise. Gentlemen, start your "try." The people are ready and willing to help either Mansfield, Cedar Gap or Seymour in building a good road to Ava. Ava Herald.

Mansfield is also ready to push his matter to a finish, and now the only thing needed is a joint committee from the towns interested and let them make the arrangements, surveys, and the thing will be done. The Mail proposes a joint meeting. What say you Mr. Herald. Mans field Mail.

All right. We have had some conversation with some of our leading business men and find them ready and willing to help in this matter. As Bro. Adams is well acquainted in both Ava and Mansfleid we would suggest that he appoint the above mentioned committee. Sore Throat.

Murray. Obituary Notice. Nettie Valentine was born in Indiar na January 27, 1844, and was married to I. W. Martin March 1, 1866, was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church in 1S59, and died January 2, 1890.

Sister Martin had been a sufferer for some months before her death but bore her affliction with true Christian fortitude. Sister Martin was a devoted and loyal christain, a true companion and affectionate mother. She loved her family dearly and did all in her power for the comfort of her loved ones. Her death was as if going to sleep. She leaves a husband and 5 children to moarn her loss, her funeral was preached by the writer January 3, at the church in Ava, and there she was hurried according to the ritual of the M.

new home. We understand Mr. Smith will be back in about a week to fully settle up his business. The BUCKSKIN BREECHES are nice comfortable looking pants so much for appearance. They are strong in seams, pockets and buttons.

The best help money will hire isn't too good for us to employ in our factory. The result is this the best working pants made at the same price as common goods. The case of the State ot Missouri ys Warner, charged with assault on the person of Ed Hart in this township, was tried by a jury in Justice Snyder's court last Monday. The jury failed to agree aud the case was continued un til the 17th ot January. Farnsworth Clark appeared for the prosecution, and.

Burkhead and Buchanan for the defense. C. H. Burdette who has lust completed a successful term of school in the Heard district near Vera Cruz, entered the Ava normal this week. Three of his pupils ectered with him, and he reports that three or more of his pupils will enter in a short time.

This shows that the Ava normal has a reputation second to none iu this part of the state. Ava is to have another store in the near future. The parties starting it will keep a general stock of everything except hardware, furniture and harness. The more stores we have in Ava the more people will come to trade. A half dozen more stores here would not hurt those who are here any, they would draw enough additional customers to make a good business for all.

The Cornet band of Ava has purchased one of C. G. Coop's Wonder Cornets. The band was indeed in need of this instrument, and we believe it was a wise move for them in making the purchase. Clarence ITailey is the lucky member who gets to toot the new horn he is "jaming" wiud through it in an artistic manner.

Clarence lias only been playing a cornet a few months, but is getting quite proficient. Girls we wish to call your attention to the fact that is leap year and this leap year has peculiar feature, an that it will be the last until 1904, 8 years. This is a condition that lias not occured since 169(5 and it will not happen again until 209G. It happens once in every 200 years, so you would bettor hurry up for the boys will have good grounds, to refuse in 1904 you will be too old. One of our Democratic friends from Spring Creek recently sent us a communication relating how he had met a drove of Kansas chintz bug traveling toward that township, and that one of them told him they were going to suck on the Wheelers of that' township, as they were the greenest tilings to be found in tin's part of the state.

We don't vouch for an thing in this story except the greenness of the Wheelers. The rapid increase in the attendance at the Ava school shows that Prof. Wilson and his able assistants Profs. Hylton and Curnutt, are just the kind of teachers that make a school a success. The school lias made more progress this winter than any since its foundation.

You never hear a word of complaint from any patron of the school, and the pupils always bragging about how fast and thorough they are getting on in their studies. The case of M. C. Reynolds a Co. vs A.

Davis etal, action to collect note, come up for trial in Justice Snyder's court last Saturday. Defendant announced that their defense would be lailure of consideration and fraud in obtaining said note and filed a general demured. Demur sustained, court holding that note alone in this case was not sufficient eyidence. R. N.

Henderson attorney for plaintiff and Farnsworth Clark for defendant. We desire to call the attention of our readers to the financial statement of the Bank of Ava. Comments are hardly necessary as the statement speaks for itself. The Bank of Ava is one of tlje solidest banks in this part of the state, and, as the statement shows, has the confidence of the business men of this county. Mr.

J. Adams vice president and J. A. G. Reynolds cashier are both Al business men and gentlemanly in their business dealings.

In the recent editorial the Salem, Oregon, Independent says: "Time and again have we seen Chamberlain's Cough Remedy tried and never without the most satisfactory results. Whenever we see a person afflicted with hoarseness, with a cough or cold, we invarably advise them to get Chamber-lam's Cough Remedy; and when they do, they never regret it. It always does the work, and does it well." Lor ale by Dr. J. H.

Murray. A man who has never lived in the country when a boy, and plowed for wheat in the fall, cut up corn, carted pumpkins, made cider, boiled apple butter, made sorghum, went after the sausage stuffer in butcher time, milked the cows, greated corn meal, kissed the girls at husking bees, stacked hay in a high wind, swallowed quinine in a scraped apple, took his castor oil in cold coffee and drank sassafras tea three months in the spring to purify his blood, has lived in vain. The exposure to all sorts and conditions of weather that a lumberman is called upon to endure the camps often produces severe colds which, if not promptly checked, result in congestion or pneumonia. Mr. J.

O. Davenport, ex-manager of the Fort Redwood says they sell large quantities of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy at the company's store and that he has himself used this remedy for a severe cold and obtained im mediate relief. This medicine prevents any tendency ot a cold toward pnea- monia and insures a prompt recovery. I For sale by Dr. J.

Miller, circuit clerk, deposited with the county treasury on January 1, 1896, $29.1,09, the same being fees in his bands belonging to people who have failed to call for them. The business men of Ava and Douglas county are beginning to realize that we can do as good job printing as can be done anywhere in the state and are patronizing us very liberally just now. G. Conner, Conner Taney county was in our city last Monday. Mr. Con ner is one of the Democratic wheel horses of that county, and as he was in consultation witn L. O.

Hailey, the Farm Record will at once come to the conclusion that some kind of a political scheme is on foot. The people of the Silver Shade school district have grown tired of do ing without a school house, and have voted bonds to build a new house. A new school house in a district will add greatly to the value of every farm in the district, and at the same time furnish nice, comfortable quarters for the children and teachers. Wni. Singleton of Jackson township was in Ava last Monday, and while here called in and subscribed for the Herald.

Mr. Singleton is a Democrat, but says he always supports the county paper regardless of its politics Mr. Singleton moved to this county from the northern part of the state about a year ago, and bids fair to be one of Douglas counties leading citizens in a few years. He is no relation of the Singletons of this county. J.
